3 Canadian Universities I Recommend for Full Scholarships — Master's Degree (2026)

If you're serious about pursuing your Master's degree in Canada for free, then you need to be applying to these 3 scholarships.

These are not partial awards or tuition discounts. These are full scholarships that cover your tuition, accommodation, and give you a monthly stipend to live on.

Pro Tip

If your country is affected by the US travel ban, Canada is one of the best alternatives. These scholarships make it financially possible to get a world-class master's degree.

1. McCall MacBain Scholarship — McGill University#

DetailInfo
UniversityMcGill University
LocationMontreal, Quebec
ScholarshipMcCall MacBain Scholars Program
TypeMerit-based (leadership, character, community engagement)
EligibilityInternational students from any country
Spots~80 scholars per year

What It Covers#

  • Full tuition and fees — every dollar of your master's program
  • $2,300 per month stipend — money in your pocket for rent, food, and living expenses
  • Relocation grant — covers your travel costs to move to Montreal
  • Mentorship and leadership programming — access to a network of scholars and leaders

The $2,300/month stipend is generous. In Montreal, where rent and cost of living are significantly lower than Toronto or Vancouver, that stipend can comfortably cover your living expenses. Plus, the relocation grant means you don't need money upfront just to get there.

How to Apply#

Important: Apply for the scholarship first, before applying to McGill for admission.

  1. The application portal opens June 1, 2026 at mccallmacbainscholars.org
  2. Complete the online application form
  3. Upload your CV/resume
  4. Provide your transcripts
  5. Submit two reference letters — one academic and one that speaks to your character and leadership
  6. Current students and recent graduates must get an endorsement from their university before submitting

2. Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program — McGill University#

DetailInfo
UniversityMcGill University
LocationMontreal, Quebec
ScholarshipMastercard Foundation Scholars Program
TypeNeed and merit-based
EligibilityStudents from African countries
Spots~35 scholars per year

What It Covers#

  • Full tuition for your master's program
  • On-campus housing — your accommodation is taken care of
  • Monthly stipend for personal expenses
  • Visa and immigration support — they help you through the entire process
  • Career development and mentorship throughout your studies

The visa and immigration support is a huge deal. Navigating Canadian immigration as an international student is stressful, and having a dedicated team helping you through it removes a massive burden.

How to Apply#

The application process has specific steps that must be followed in order:

  1. Confirm your eligibility on the McGill Mastercard Foundation website
  2. Register for and attend a mandatory information session — this is the only way to receive the link to the application form
  3. Complete and submit the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program application by the deadline
  4. If you pass the pre-screening phase, you'll receive a fee waiver and detailed instructions to apply for admission to McGill

Important Rules#

  • Do NOT apply directly to McGill or contact professors before being invited through the scholarship process
  • Only students who receive the fee waiver through the scholarship application will be considered for the award
  • The application typically opens in August with a deadline in late August or October

  • Housing allowance — money for accommodation in Vancouver
  • Monthly stipend for living expenses
  • Health insurance
  • Academic and career support services

UBC is consistently ranked among the top 40 universities globally. Vancouver is one of the most livable cities in the world. What makes UBC's program unique is that it has two separate streams — one for general applicants and one specifically for refugees.

How to Apply#

Which Should You Apply To?#

Apply to all three if you're eligible. More applications means more chances.

  • McCall MacBain is open to all international students regardless of country — if you're not from Africa, this is your best option
  • Mastercard Foundation (McGill and UBC) are for African / sub-Saharan African students — if you qualify, apply to both
  • If you're a refugee, UBC's dedicated refugee stream is especially worth pursuing

Why Canada for Your Master's Degree?#

  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) — up to 3 years of work authorization after graduation
  • Clear immigration pathway — Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs make permanent residency achievable
  • Lower tuition than most US universities (and free with these scholarships)
  • Welcoming immigration policies — Canada actively recruits international talent
  • World-class universities — McGill and UBC are globally recognized
  • No travel ban — Canada is not affected by U.S. travel restrictions

Need Funding Beyond Scholarships?#

Even if you don't get one of these full scholarships, MPOWER Financing offers loans to international students studying in the US and Canada — no cosigner required. They evaluate your future earning potential, not your current financial situation.

Frequently Asked Questions#

Can I apply to all three scholarships at the same time?#

You can apply to the McCall MacBain Scholarship and one of the Mastercard Foundation programs, since they're at different universities. However, the two Mastercard Foundation programs (McGill and UBC) would require separate applications to each university.

Do I need to be from a travel-banned country to apply?#

No. These scholarships are open regardless of travel ban status. The McCall MacBain is open to students from any country. The Mastercard Foundation scholarships are for African students specifically.

What GPA do I need?#

There's no strict GPA cutoff published, but these are competitive scholarships. A strong academic record is expected — generally a GPA equivalent of 3.5+ or first-class honors.

Do I need work experience for a master's program in Canada?#

It depends on the program. Some master's programs require work experience (especially MBAs), while others accept students directly from undergraduate studies. Check the specific program requirements at McGill or UBC.

Is Montreal or Vancouver better for international students?#

Both are excellent. Montreal has a significantly lower cost of living, a vibrant cultural scene, and is bilingual (French/English). Vancouver has milder weather, a large international community, and proximity to the US tech industry. Your choice should depend on your program and personal preferences.

How competitive are these scholarships?#

Very. The McCall MacBain accepts roughly 80 scholars per year from thousands of applicants. The Mastercard Foundation programs accept 25–35 each. But competitive doesn't mean impossible — a strong application with clear leadership and purpose can absolutely win.
